Imagine flying from Michigan to the Caribbean and Florida regularly for work. For Darin Jemison, a Grand Rapids native, this is the new normal. Darin is the AHC Regional Director of Food and Beverages for AHC+Hospitality, which operates Amway Grand Plaza in Grand Rapids (Curio Collection by Hilton), JW Marriott, AC Hotel, Courtyard by Marriott, Hyatt Place and Peter Island Resort and Spa. Just to name a few.

When he first began working at AHC+Hospitality in 1990, Darin had just graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a bachelor’s degree in general studies. Not quite sure what his calling in life was at the time, Darin decided to join the world of hospitality after connecting with a friend in the industry.

Entering into unfamiliar territory, Darin’s humble beginnings were in the dish room at the Amway Grand Plaza, among a crew of 130 people. Darin was eventually promoted to a food service position and went on to become a director at AHC+Hospitality. In his new role, he frequently travels to the Caribbean, working at the Peter Island Resort and Spa. AHC+Hospitality has even paid for Darin to become food and beverage certified.

For Darin, college is one path, but it’s not the only path. There are multiple ways to get to where you want to go, and Darin says he’s living proof.
